GreenSpace advocates the proper disposal of waste, with a focus on food waste. We aim to make composting a natural part of daily life in order to normalize putting waste in its proper place, rather than letting it pollute our environment. In GreenSpace, we treat waste as a valuable resource.
Compost is a nutrient-rich fertilizer made of decomposed organic materials. These organic materials can be leaves, twigs, fruit peels, apple cores, coffee grounds. Composting helps keep soil healthy, which leads to healthier produce! There are different methods of composting—and making the choice is up to personal preference—but here at GreenSpace, we specialize in Bokashi composting.
Composting has many benefits! It enriches soil, allowing the production of healthier plants and healthier produce. It's a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers. It diverts food waste away from harmful landfills, minimizing methane emissions (and lowering carbon footprint!). Plus; it's SIMPLE!
Bokashi bran is made of good microorganisms that help break down the chemical composition of food waste so that they decompose more easily once mixed with soil. This method of composting also allows the inclusion of products such as meat, fish, and dairy which are generally not allowed in most methods of composting!
You can purchase composting buckets and Bokashi bran at our shop!
Bokashi is a Japanese word that means "fermented organic matter." Bokashi bran is the bokashi mixture we use for bokashi composting. It is made of rice bran mixed with carbonized rice hull that is fermented using EM1 Microbial Inoculant. It contains millions, even billions of beneficial microorganisms that work to ferment food waste without developing foul smell.
There are five different groups of microbes present in Bokashi bran and they are all completely harmless! Our Bokashi Bran is made with EM1 Microbial Inoculant that contains only naturally-occurring beneficial microbes with primary microbes being yeast and lactobacilli.
Bokashi juice is full of beneficial microorganisms and has many uses around the home. You can pour it into your sink and drains; you may also use it in your garden and let your soil enjoy a microbial-ful life!
Composting methods are generally up to personal preference—which fits your lifestyle best, or perhaps you’ve done a trial and error with multiple methods and found which is easiest for you. Although, the benefit of Bokashi composting is that you can throw any solid food waste (fruit peels, chicken and fish bones, rotten vegetables) into your composting bucket. Bokashi bran can handle any solid food waste! There’s also no need to handle worms if that’s not your thing.
One of the biggest benefits of using the Bokashi method is that you can include any solid food waste (just remember to drain them before putting them in your bucket). Chicken and fish bones, fruit peelings, vegetable scraps, meats. Although, depending on your diet, the amount of bran to be used differs. If there's mostly fruits and vegetables, a handful of bran is enough per layer. If there are more meats in your diet, it's best to add up to two handfuls.
Our buckets are specifically made for Bokashi fermentation. It is made of upcycled plastics, is air-tight, and has a spigot and strainer for Bokashi juice collection! If you prefer to use your own bucket, simply make sure that it's air-tight and it is best if there's a spigot so you can collect Bokashi juice to be used as fertilizer.
On average, a household of 4 will fill up one standard bucket (20L) in two weeks' time, which makes approximately 10kgs of food waste. A smaller household can choose the mini bucket (16L) which can hold up to 8kgs of food waste.
